what would be your take on starting the AT mid to late May, northbound starting at Harpers Ferry? I don’t think I can do the whole trail in one year and thought that starting at a point that may be ahead of many thru hikers would be less congested and maybe not as much competition for hur space at the end of a day. If I were to make the northern half, I suspect the black flies in Maine will be the biggest issue (kinda kidding) but I don’t want to feel pressure from other hikers any more than necessary.
Any comments/advice you have are welcome. Nice article in Sunday paper, hope it sells a lot of DVDs for you.
Thanks for the note. Actually, your plan is an excellent one. In fact, I know of at least one other person that has the same plan. She will be starting from HF around mid-May. There will already be some thru hikers there by then, but you should be able to miss the “herd”, for the most part. I’m not sure when black fly season is in Maine, but I’ve been there in August and September with no problem.
